Artist's Description
Extracted from a series of 9 as a documentary on the difficult condition of this miners.
At Java island extreme east, in the Kendeng caldera, lies the Kawah Ijen volcano. It host a large acid lake and sulfur in very large quantities.
Around 200 miners are working manually this open sky mine in an almost continuous toxic cloud. Often without a breathing mask or other protection than simple plastic boot, the miners can carry 60 to 90kg of sulfur cristal in simple basket on their shoulders.
